[U/C] Re: North-South Motorway

A zig zag is really not a practical way to get a 1.6km long freight train down a slope though, and we already have a big horse-shoe - it goes via Blackwood.
However, a Spiral would work (I think) and would also be really really cool.

[VIS] Re: Interstate Trains at Adelaide Railway Station

Aidan, While I agree that Adelaide is definitely big enough to be a significant freight origin/destination in it's own right, in today's world of just-in-time deliveries (rather than warehousing), where time is money, the extra time taken to deliver to Adelaide by rail will, I believe, lose market s...

I'm surprised there isn't a proposal in the pipeline for a solar power station near Wudinna, as far west (later sunset) as it is possible to connect to the grid, and scaled to the capacity of the grid flowing east.
Interesting concept.

[U/C] Re: North-South Motorway

From memory they spent $6 Million on the plan for the North-South Motorway which basically broke it up into sections and attempted to prioritise the order of those sections (which has subsequently been ignored). cities are in a constant state of change and thus we cannot plan accordingly. I wouldn'...

[VIS] Re: Interstate Trains at Adelaide Railway Station

I'm pretty sure the bypass you're talking about is an eastern Hills Bypass, not a western Hills Bypass. A western Hills Bypass would still necessitate crossing the hills. That's why I said it would be pointless. Further to that, I wonder what an eastern Hills Bypass would do for rail freight to Adel...

Rhino, you need to re-read my post. I never said tourism would pay for a railway. I just said that I think potential patronage from tourists is underestimated. Don't put words in my mouth.
Sorry Shuz, I did miss-read your post.

[VIS] Re: Interstate Trains at Adelaide Railway Station

Can you point to the roads in South Australia that have been built and maintained without government grants/subsidies? :) Nice comeback, but not really valid. Roads get made because there is a need to supply access, and a road is the cheapest form of access. As the road gets more use, when the upke...

[VIS] Re: Interstate Trains at Adelaide Railway Station

I think one of the severely underestimated benefits is tourists looking to go on a day trip to the Hills without having to take the car (or the Barossa). I count myself in this category. If there was a passenger rail service available, which improves accessibility and a different means of getting t...

The western hills bypass is established policy.
Except it isn't. And it would be pointless. Think about it.

Re: The SA Politics Thread

can reduce demand for the ones we have (and increase affordability for all) by increasing housing supply and choice with higher densities (again, in the right places). Sorry this is off-track for the thread, but have you been to Mount Barker, Littlehampton, Nairne lately? 35-40km from the city and ...

Re: The SA Politics Thread

Well I don't know what's going on here, but I find myself in agreeance with Rev. All these points apply to me, and to my friends, too. It brings to mind the arguments a few years ago against the 1/4 acre block, and the militants on this site who insist on medium density living. What about those of u...

The best option for freight rail would be to send it west of the hills.

[U/C] Re: Northern Connector | 14km | $1b

Personally, I would call it the Charles Sturt Freeway from Nuriootpa to the River Torrens, which would tie in to the Sturt Highway, and the City of Charles Sturt, in which Sturt's home (The Grange) sits. From the River Torrens to Old Noarlunga I would call it the George Kingston Freeway, after the m...
